Many of the GTA residents already know Markham’s Unionville neighbourhood. This neighbourhood combines the beauty of the countryside with the convenience of city living, it has one of Ontario's best schools, making Unionville a great place to call home. 

Where is Unionville located

Unionville is in the centre of Markham, roughly bounded by the following streets: 16th Ave, Kennedy Rd, Hwy 407, and Warden Ave.  Its proximity to Hwy 404 and Hwy 407 makes the charming neighbourhood very convenient to travel to anywhere in the Greater Toronto Area. 

How to access Unionville, Markham by Transit

The Unionville neighbourhood is served by the York Region Transit and Viva buses right within the neighbourhood. There is a Unionville Go Station with daily scheduled trains travelling to downtown Toronto, making the daily commute to work a little easier and more comfortable.

Historical Community and Community Amenities

Unionville, established in the 1790s, has become popular with visitors due to the way their communities pair culture, modernity, and historic charm.

Every year, there are tens of thousands of travellers from all over the world attracted to Unionville by its distinct European exotic aroma and cultural heritage. The Main Street in Unionville has stood for over 200 years, and it kept all the original building designs. Every summer, there are numerous cultural and celebrational events hosted in Main Street.

Sitting on one end of Main Street is the Varley Art Gallery, aside from hosting art exhibitions, it also offers many art courses to people of all ages. On typical sunny days, you would see artists sketching down the beautiful scenery on their canvas at Toogood Pond, a 33-hectare wetland reservation park. This natural oxygen bar has a wide lake surface, primeval forest, walking path, grassland, and rich varieties of wildlife, making it a perfect place for Unionville residents’ leisure and exercise activities.

Aside from tourist attractions within the historical community, Crosby Memorial Community Center is an important amenity in the neighbourhood. Not only it provides numerous services to local residents, it is also the hockey arena hosting many of GTA’s important hockey games and tournaments.

In terms of shopping, there are numerous Asian supermarkets, stores, restaurants, and plazas within the neighbourhood. For example, Loblaws, T&T Supermarket, Langham Square, New Kennedy Square are all located in Unionville.

One of the biggest advantages of Unionville over other neighbourhoods is its choice of public schools. William Berczy Public School, the top 1% elementary school in Ontario according to Fraser Institute, is in this community. William Berczy Public School not only provides excellent educational resources to all its students, but it also has a Gifted Program that helps students further their academic achievement. The School Principal and the teachers are very friendly, and they would actively engage with the parents to let them learn about their children’ s lives at school.

Students who graduate from William Berczy elementary school will be able to enroll in Unionville Secondary School, a top 2% secondary school in Ontario with a rich history and good reputation. Unionville High School also has a unique arts program designed for students with artistic talent.

After graduating from Union­ville High School, many students were able to enrol into post-secondary school arts programmes to further their development in this field.

Demographics amongst Unionville Residents

Unionville residents are from various cultural backgrounds, including multi-generational Canadians of Italian, Korean, and Chinese descent. Residents with Chinese cultural background makes up about 65% of Unionville’s demographic, and the most common languages spoken are Cantonese, English, and Mandarin.

Unionville is one of the most affluent neighbourhoods in Ontario.  Most of its residents have a high education background: almost 70% of the residents have a post-secondary degree, and the average household income is around $180K. As a result, the neighbourhood crime rate is 32% lower than the average of all neighbourhoods in Canada, making this one of the most ideal neighbourhoods to settle.

According to TRREB past 4 month’s market statistics, the average price for detached property in this community is around $2.09 million, a little higher than Berczy’s average detached price of $1.80 million. (Based on 2021 September to December data)
